I have recently moved to Albany for medical training and I have been surprised by the lack of pedestrian crossing signals around Albany.  I walk to work every morning and I am constanly worried about my safety as a pedestrian.  This problem is particularly bad around the Medical Center.  I cross the intersection at New Scotland and S. Lake every morning and have to take my life into my own hands.  Since this intersection is large and not at right angles, it is very difficulty for pedestrians to see the traffic signals.  As a pedestrian you have to guess (and hope) that the lights are in your favor when you cross.  I have almost been struck  several times at this intersection and other similar intersections in the area.

Of note too, is the poor signage for pedestrian crossings along New Scotland avenue.  Much of New Scotland has designated crossing zones which are almost completely ignored by drivers.  Albany needs to install improved signage at these crossings and ideally I would like to see signalled crosswalks (with flashing lights) set up.

These measures would greatly improve the walkability of these neighborhoods.  Not only would the community spirit in Pine Hills, but would encourage people to consider walking around the neighborhood.
